The Toxic Mix

Have you ever thought about why Oil and Water can’t blend into each other? What’s so difficult in that mix that the combination cannot happen? I’d never given this thought until I spilled oil on my legs…would you love to know what happened?

Stay with me.

[14] Do not be unequally bound together with unbelievers [do not make mismatched alliances with them, inconsistent with your faith]. For what partnership can righteousness have with lawlessness?

[15] Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and Belial (Satan)? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭(AMP‬‬)

Recently, I had to sort out some chores around the house and it was going smoothly until the spillage happened. I was trying to move a container away from its initial position and from outside, it seemed like the lid was tightly sealed, so although I could feel that there was a liquid content in it, I wasn’t bothered because I could see that it was covered. There should not be any problem, I thought.

Soon enough – and I’m not sure how it happened, but – the lid flew open and black, oily content spilled all over the floor and my legs! I immediately abandoned all I was doing and raced to the tap to get water to rinse my legs clean of the oily feeling and unsightly look.

Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked [following their advice and example], Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit [down to rest] in the seat of scoffers (ridiculers).

Psalms‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬ ‭(AMP)

However, when I turned on the water to rinse my legs, I discovered that the oil wasn’t washing off on its own. Instead, it got really messy. I thought to myself, how do I get this off? I just wasn’t feeling comfortable with both liquids on my legs, so I had to get soap and sponge to scrub thoroughly.

After a thorough session that seemed to last forever, my legs returned to normalcy and I wiped them dry with a cloth.

While I was scrubbing, a thought crossed my mind about how hot oil in a pan reacts fiercely when water drops into it while on the gas. It’s not supposed to mind because they are both liquid right? But it doesn’t work that way. Why?

Simply put; They are not the same!

Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

James‬ ‭4‬:‭4‬ ‭‭‭(RSV‬‬)

Though oil and water are both liquid content, their properties aren’t the same. In fact, the molecules they are made up of cause them to repel. This is why there are many proverbs and sayings about both liquids not mixing.

What are those familiar yet totally different things, habits, thoughts, or people you have allowed to mix with you?

For every child of God, there are instructions and guidelines that have been set by the Father Himself. These are meant to help your life become better daily – once you choose to live with them. One of such guides is a message embedded in Psalm 1:1-2 and it’s a guide to help you overcome Sin. The 4th Psalm also says this:

[14] Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not go the way of evil men.

[15] Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on.

Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭(AMP)

This is a call to remind you that the people you spend time with, the songs you listen to, the habits you cave into; all these influence you like little drops of water in oil and once pressure sets in, they set the tone into the decisions you make.

Soon, you may find yourself in a toxic mix and it takes the help of the Holy Spirit to help get you out.

Dear reader, it’s better to avoid Sin than to fall into it.
